Juniper berries

Juniper berries taste sweet and sour and have a balsamic smell. They are good for
seasoning strong-flavoured foods such as game and pickled cabbage, but are also ideal
for smoking cold cuts, minced meat and vegetable stews.
Juniper berries are not actually berries, in fact they are a sort of green fruit which turn dark when ripening. Italy and Hungary are the main European producers, as they are widespread in the Alps and the Apennines.
