Poppy seeds are characterised by a sweet smell and a nutty taste. In cooking, they are mainly used in confectionery and baked products, including many types of bread. They are also excellent for seasoning and flavouring salads or pasta dishes.
Poppy seeds are extracted from the plants of the Papaveraceae family, which originate from an area that stretches from the eastern Mediterranean region to Central Asia. Their
shape is very similar to that of a kidney and they can be white or black.
